Education in Haiti isn't taken for granted. Families sacrifice a great deal to put their children in school, and many of them don't have anything to sacrifice in the first place. It is a desperate time of year for many, as they struggle to find the means to fund their future dreams.

First Day Of School
The School Year has begun. The first day of school in La Digue looked much like the first day of school anywhere. The yard was full of hopes, fears, and expectations. There are the "upper-classmen" full of attitude and new confidence. The new students and kindergartners looked scared and unsure. They're all wearing their new or nearly new uniforms and tennis shoes, and sporty new backpacks. My favorite part was watching the parents who escorted their little ones to school today. It reminded me of the parents who put their "baby" on the bus or drop them off at school for the first time in America. Parent and child full of dreams and worries.
