Making the Jump

We are excited to share our new plans with you.

September 1, 2008 we will officially join two other ministries. We're excited, scared, sad and happy all at once. We're learning that faith does not grow in the house of certainty; and our faith is growing.

We've been incredibly blessed by the support of our readers and we're anxious to share this news with you. It is clear to us that our time in LaDigue (with Lifeline) was a perfect way to learn culture and language for a time, and now it is time to move on to new things.

Our desire is to use the experience we've gained by focusing our time, energy and resources on doing things that will impact God's kingdom and the country for generations to come. We have a burden to bring missionaries together in a more cooperative effort - for greater impact. We believe that some are called to operate large ministries, some are called to small, some are focused on sustainability while others respond to immediate needs - but ALL can make a greater difference when working in cooperation. We're amazed by the work of so many here. We hope to find ways to encourage them. We all work better in community. (And yes, the word community is overused. But give us a pass.)

One of our two roles will be acting as "Country Directors" for World Wide Village. It kind of makes it seem like we have quite a bit of pull. (What with directing the entire country and all...) Titles don't mean a lot to us. The title means, we'll do what needs to be done and be the feet on the street for WWV to get projects done in Haiti. (We tried to get them to call us "Supreme Commanders of the left half of Hispaniola", but it would not fit on the business card.)

They are a Minnesota-based ministry working on various large projects in Haiti, and need people on the ground to help keep everyone accountable and to be sure the funds are indeed accomplishing the desired results.
World Wide Village will be handling all of our personal financial support. They are a non-profit, registered 501C3 and will provide receipts for tax purposes. We're excited to share some of the specific projects WWV is working on. Later this week Troy (in his WWV Country Director role) will be going to MN for two days to meet with MN Teen Challenge about an exciting program they're hoping to plant here next year. We are also planting a seminary in the South and overseeing various projects all over the island.

In our second role, we will begin partnering with Heartline Ministries in a part time capacity. I don't believe we've been given a title. Heartline Ministries has two core programs. They operate a Children’s home and process adoptions. Hundreds of orphaned children have found loving homes due to the work of Heartline’s orphanage. They also offer a Women’s Program that works to help empower women by giving them life skills and training. This program is nothing short of amazing and is growing at a very fast rate. We're anxious to help them and support their work in any way we can.

Troy will be working in a variety of roles, working along side John McHoul. Tara will work in an administrative role with the Women's Program. We’re thankful for the opportunity to join solid and proven missionaries like John and Beth McHoul.

Now. Having said all of that, having admitted we're scared and excited all at once ... here it comes; the pitch- We are seeking folks who might be interested in joining our support team. We need to find a few others with common passions and interests that might like to join us and help us be here.

So - truthfully, we need both monthly partners (people that believe enough in the work being done to say, yeah - I'll send you $30 every month)... and we are raising money for one-time expenses such as tuition for school, travel to the USA at some point, and rent for our house which must be paid a year in advance.

We're glad you're making the jump with us!

I'll call you guys Scot for short. sounds like very exciting things, and very challenging and scary too. you also have a boatload of kids to think about while you are doing this. while you are coordinating missionaries, arrange if you can someone who likes to find air conditioning for wimp newbies to Haiti.... :) seriously, it sounds VERY exciting. will pray for arrangements for you all to work out well.

This all sounds so good for all involved, but are you physically moving? What happens to the place you are at now and the children, school and feeding program? Just curious. Will someone else be taking over for you?
Thanks in advance for clearing this up for me.
Love your blog and your family
God Bless

Questions are good. We're glad you asked.

Yes, Lifeline has a replacement coming. The young couple arrives July 8th. We will have about 7 weeks with them - and then of course we will be available to them after that. We care deeply about the people of this area and it is hard to leave them in particular. Oh, and this really nice house that Lifeline built.

We want to be careful not to throw the God card. We don't claim to know 100% what God is doing, we shy away from statements like "God told me" -- we began praying about this move in August of '07 and did not make a decision until Feb 08 - but then decided to stay until Sept 08 - because above all, we want what is best for the people in the area we serve. There are multiple reasons for the move. But it would lack prudence to list them. (I am hearing George Bush Senior "wouldn't be prudent ... at this juncture) (But if you never saw that skit on SNL you have no idea what I am talking about.)

We hope to visit occasionally and stay connected to the area. We fully expect that Tipap and Peter and Rony and Jeronne ... and many others we've built relationship with will be lifelong friends.

While we can never claim to totally know God's plan - we're doing our best to follow Him and trusting He gives us wiggle room and also has the power to adjust our plan if we're messing it up. God is good like that.

Thanks for asking.

Supreme Commander of the Left Half of Hispaniola. SCOTLHOH for short, you guys totally are perfect for this!!!! Now for the other title...I was thinking something along the lines of "Assistant to the District Manager". (make Schrute proud!)

I am so excited for you guys and I totally get the *the pitch*. We'd love to send you guys some money for the car...it is a neccessary part of your ministry. We'll get that check in the mail...I am so bad about mailing things, but I promise I will! It would be an honor to support you guys in this new journey God has you on.

Your obedience to Christ is inspiring! Your faith is exciting! Your heart to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ to a country that desperately needs Him is moving! Praise Jesus for you guys! You totally ROCK!

Awesome!! We're in with you--sign us up. Sometimes it can be hard to know what to do to really affect change in the world. Like your guest poster said, the needs can be overwhelming. I think part of what you do with this blog is to help people feel connected to God's great concern for the poor and parentless in Haiti, and to what God is already doing there. Thank you for doing so much of the hard work, and thank you for giving us the opportunity to join you even in a small way.

So, will WWV be covering you financially for your work with Heartline Ministries? We've actually supported Heartline for the last four or five years, ever since we almost adopted from Haiti. (We ended up adopting from South Africa and then domestically in the US instead.) Will part of your support come from our gifts to Heartline, or is only money donated to WWV directly supporting your family? Maybe it doesn't matter too much, I'm just wondering how donated money gets distributed to various parts of the ministry. (Ummm, not that I don't trust them because I totally do, just curious what's the most efficient way to support you.)

World Wide Village will receive our support (we raise all of it - neither ministry can pay a salary) and they will process it (give you a receipt)and get it to us to use for "doing life" down here. (WWV also has a general fund and it is important to note where you want your donation to be used - general fund or Livesay Family - or other specific projects can be noted.)

The gifts given to Heartline would go to their general fund and are used to do many things, those gifts are important too.

So cool that you have supported Heartline - it is making a difference in the lives of many!

I love that SNL skit...! That made me giggle. I say that ALL the time and make the gestures. Thanks again for making me smile. You all are in my prayers! I've been too busy to read, much less comment. I love you all and Tara, you are so right that "God is good, like that". He will take good care of you and your family, after all He (notice the cap) has been/is/will be working on all the details...love to all...Sharon

I was praying for you guys a few weeks ago and felt certain that you were meant to work in the adoption field. What an amazing leap of faith! Congratulations. The Lord will be faithful to you all.

SO great that you are working with John & Beth. They seriously were angels to me throughout the 3 years I spent in Haiti.

And I believe so much in the work Heartline is doing - and I really look forward to reading the stories you will share about that work, Tara!

I'm still in school, but when I'm done, definitely I'll support your work as much as I can.

Oh my gosh Tara, how exciting!!!
I love watching your family stretch and grow in faith, determination, dedication to God, but most of all love.
You will be an incredible asset to both ministries and the Haiti govt better WATCH OUT with Troy handling adoptions. That place has NO IDEA what they are in store for.
Seriously, it must be a huge sigh of relief for families to have Troy, you, and your buds working on adoptions. That is truly a blessing - truly.
Keep us updated on the progress and I'm hoping you have peace with everything.
Hugs,
Ericka
