Paige's Goal - Update

You might have noticed in the previous post from Paige, she posted a goal that she thought was somewhat balanced between challenging and obtainable.

Thanks to the generosity of good people, in 30 minutes the goal was reached. :) So -- maybe not such a challenging goal after-all!?? Since then a lot more has come in. Paige is totally excited, thinking that twice her original goal is very likely by race day, June 6, 2010. She is going to leave the goal the way it was and just see what happens. Please consider sponsoring her even though she is over 100% of goal.

The neatest development of all has been an offer made by Maxima S.A. They have offered a house for house match. This is a factory that had been producing products and employing people for a long time - they are in Haiti - and now, post- EQ they are producing pre-fab houses. They are creating many jobs by doing all of the work in Haiti - you may have seen them when former Presidents Bush and Clinton visited their factory a few weeks ago.
This came from them last night:

I am so proud of you!!
MAXIMA S.A. wants to sponsor you:

For every house you raise money for, they will give you a house for FREE.

Go Girl !!

Love,
Stefan & Els
MAXIMA S.A.

We are linking you to their site to see what the houses look like. We are estimating that each house will cost $2,500. For every ONE house that Paige can raise funds for, Maxima S.A. will give her a house!

As of the posting of this update - WITH YOUR HELP - Paige has enough to purchase FOUR homes and Maxima S.A. will GIVE her FOUR more -- Eight Houses and Eight families helped.

We're really excited to see where this goes. Amazing things have happened in less than 24 hours. Thanks for joining in and not only encouraging Paige -- but more importantly, helping the people of Haiti begin to rebuild.

We will keep you posted as we're able to identify the families that will be receiving new homes. A link to the Chip In Meter for Paige's race is also being added to the left side of this blog. Thanks for chipping in!

So excited that Paige's goal has already been exceeded! And, thanks so much for info on the building company -- this is exactly the kind of Haiti-based effort that we (stateside folks, aid workers, friends of Haiti, etc.) need to plug into. Mesi anpil!

Soooo awesome! I shared Paige's post on my FB and asked for support for her. I don't know if that helped or not, but I hope so. Way to go, Paige!!!

I'm just wondering...does Haiti have termites? Will wooden housing last for long? Or are they just meant to be temporary, so it doesn't matter?

Thanks!

GO PAIGE!!! How awesome!!

Love you!

From my experience (in my closet!), Haitian homes can have termites, but there is protective paint that can be used to prevent termite infestation and to kill termites if they do appear. I suspect it's the same as in the States: there's always a chance but it's not a given that you'll get them.

Here is what Maxima has to say about the houses:

All the wood that Maxima uses is termite treated :-) They are also, when properly anchored hurricane proof.
With some extra finishing on walls etc. they can last up to 15 years or longer (that is the temporarily shelter house)

The Creole style house is a big hit, Haitian people are so excited about it, as they had input on what would work for them.
This house can last a long long time depending on the finishing.

Paige is hoping to buy the Creole Style house that is $2500 ... the one that is not considered temporary - the nicer of the two.

I've just been reading since the eq and I'm so SORRY that my eyes and heart had to be opened by such a devastating tragedy. That being said, I've been working on small ways to make a difference in Haiti. Thank you, Livesays, for making that happen.

Go for it, Paige, we're very proud of you for stepping out this way. And special blessings to Troy and Tara for raising a teenager who thinks of others first. Not an easy task, I know. May your efforts produce a village of homes full of people ready to hear from God. Joy

What a great idea. I wish I could express how much your family inspires me. I am happy to support Paige and know that she will do so well with her goals!

What a great idea, Paige! And very courageous for someone who doesn't usually run to begin training for this. I'm sure, with your trainer, you will succeed. I passed on the link to your blog through our church email, hoping others will see this as a very specific way to help Haiti. I think Paige should go "national", with some news media covering this, as I suspect many, many more would be willing to help in this specific way. How about it? Anyone know Ann Curry or Matt Lauer? I'm serious, except for not feeling as if you're taking advantage of the wonderful company matching her house for house. There should be other corporations who would contribute to help cover those costs.

I also passed on that you will be in Okoboji this summer, as that's not too far from our area. A member of our church volunteered his time and private plane for flights in and out of Haiti after the quake, so we had that connection to be praying for him at that time, also. I've been reading your blog for some time and appreciate your comittment to helping those in need, at great cost to your own comforts. Yours is an example of "radical faith".

Thank you!

So thrilled at the superduper response to Paige's run. Congratulations Paige.
I think people have been waiting for Heartline to announce it's plans for the ministry. I understand that it is difficult and the earthquake changed EVERYTHING. But now we are 3 months out and still no plans have been announced. When I donate (and I think there are many others who feel this way,) I like to know what I am giving money to. And it helps if it a very specific thing I can visualize--in this case houses. Perfect! We in the States keep hearing about the overwhelming need for housing. I am happy to contribute. I think Heartline should use this model more and say, "We need $20,000 to buy a piece of land," or "$15,00o would allow us to double the size of the women's program." Or whatever the need is. You guys are just wonderful and following your blog is very meaningful in my life. Terri Urban

Hi Terri -
I passed your comment along so that our Board and leadership could read your take on things and word of advice. I agree that tangible goals and needs is helpful to donors and supporters ... and we will all try to do better at that.

Heartline will be doing much of what we were doing before the earthquake - the Womens Program: Literacy, Sewing, Prenatal, EarlyChildhood Development classes and delivering the babies of the women in our program and others on a case by case basis.

That is the core of the ministry. Right now they still have an in-patient hospital ward of close to 20 patients -- feeding them and providing for them as they finish their healing.

Heartline will be helping all of its employees rebuild. Each person that works for Heartline will be receiving the help they need to fix damage and rebuild. That has already started.

Heartline will be buying homes from Maxima, SA -- (with Paige's fundraising and with the other funds being raised) and we are trying to work out land issues -- and figure out options for those without a place to build. Hopefully those answers will come in the next six to eight weeks - we need them to come!

As far as Paige goes --- THANK YOU ALL SOOO SO MUCH --- She is very funny, she walks in and hits refresh on the Chip in meter and is quite hilarious with her commentary about this amazing thing we get to be watching you all do. :) Thanks so much for donating ... who knows how many houses this will equal?!?!? Too soon to make good guesses I think.

Hi, I am posting to let Paige know that I will sign up to sponsor her. At this time, I am not sure of the amount; but I will donate!

Good luck with your training. You can do it, Paige. :)

I really appreciate your blog and the important information you give us! Thank you!

Tara, I totally agree that the more specific & tangible the goal, the more likely people will be excited about donating...I had been pondering the $300k Heartline goal & it seemed so huge & nebulous that even though I completely trust they would use the money well, it just felt like what I could give would be a drop in the bucket (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, i just think it really helps to break it down into smaller goals that are easier to visualize & reach)

Also, I LOVE the Creole style homes & that those are what Paige is going for...I have one question, though...on the flyer it says the $2500 price does not include siding or concrete or labor...is there a way to figure those costs to get at what the true cost per home will be?

Thank you for reading my comment and passing it on to the "upper management" folks at Heartline. I'm sure John would bust a gut at that title. I remember reading in the Heartline blog that he had some land in mind to buy...maybe someday there could be a Heartline Village.
About how many employees does Heartline have? And I know there are patient families, like Marie Rose who you want to help also.
Anyway, I am going to make gaining Heartline land a specific prayer to storm heaven with-- and I suggest you get all your prayer people on that right away. Blessings on you and yours,
Terri Urban

Oops - Inara - I answered your question on the post called Marie Rose Lundi by accident -- we think we will try to add the money in to do the good siding. Troy will be in Haiti in mid May and we're going to get all the plans more solidified for these houses -- hopefully we can just buy the siding too!

This absolutely brings tears to my eyes that she would exceed her goal so quickly and 8 new homes will be built for Haitian families! Go Paige!!
